24th Annual Bucktail Reunion Invitation
It is time for us to yet again send out invitations for one of the community’s most anticipated events of the year, “Muster in The Park”. We are very excited to announce that this year “Muster” will be a shared event with the 24th Annual Bucktail Reunion!
When the 150th commemorations for various Civil War battles started across the nation, the 150th Bucktails decided that we wanted to hold a local event. For the past four years we have been hosting “Muster” in Meadville’s beloved Diamond Park. It was so well received by the public that we were able to turn the event into a fundraiser. The proceeds have gone towards the preservation of our Civil War Statue - “The American Flag and Soldier Monument”, better known as the “Peiffer Memorial”. Sergeant Samuel Peiffer was the Color Bearer for the 150th who lost his life in Gettysburg on the first day of battle at McPherson's Farm. With this being the Event’s 5th Anniversary, we will be unveiling the newly preserved monument with all the dignity and ceremony that our “boys in blue” deserve. We would be greatly honored to share this special moment with our fellow Bucktails and your immediate family.
This special dedication ceremony and The 24th Bucktail Reunion will be held over Labor Day weekend, September 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2017. We will start setting up on Thursday August 31st, you are welcome to join us and set up early if you wish. Friday the 1st is the main day for setting up and there will be a campfire talk that evening about the Bucktails. Saturday the 2nd is the main event day, it will tentatively include these exciting historical presentations listed below:
President and Mrs. Lincoln ● Cannon Demonstrations ● Military Drills ● Skirmishes ● A Clock Maker ● Ordinance Department ● A Field Hospital with Civil War Nurses and Nuns ● Blacksmith ● Dressmaker and Fashion Show ● Artifact Displays
Also the Goat Girl Saloon will be there fully stocked with dill pickles, hot dogs, ice cold root beer and other items. Our Hometown Mercantile will be packed full of quality homemade goods such as Civil War shirts, rag rugs, and period correct toys for purchase.
This year we will be including an exclusive event only for reenactors - a trip to Greendale Cemetery. Here you will visit the graves of those who gave their lives to preserve the Union. Captain Dallas will be leading the tour and those who attend will receive a packet with information on the men who are laid to rest there. We will provide a shuttle from the park to the cemetery for those who are interested.
Friday and Saturday evening, there will be entertainment in the gazebo. We have different Civil War bands scheduled to play, but reenactors who are gifted with musical talents are invited to join in! Sunday morning there will be a church service presided over by our own Chaplain, John Sites; this will be followed by a memorial bell ringing, where the names of those who gave their “last full measure of devotion” will be read. If your unit has names that they would like to add to the list please let me know. Also, if anyone would like to be a reader for this ceremony, please have them indicate this on their registration form.
There will be a Chinese Auction, a Raffle for a Handmade Reproduction Officer’s Desk and Chair, and also a 50/50 Raffle that will take place over the course of the weekend. Tickets will be drawn Sunday after the ceremony.
We will provide pizza Friday evening, breakfast and dinner on Saturday as well as breakfast on Sunday. Your registration fee will be returned to help with your travel expenses at check in. If you have paid, but are unable to attend, your registration will be used towards Reunion expenses. There is electric in the park, porta potties, and campfires will be permitted (depending on climate conditions). Firewood and water will also be provided for you. Pets are not allowed.
We encourage you to participate in as much or as little as you desire. It is our hope that you have a relaxing and memorable weekend. As your hosts, we place no expectations on you, and hope that you enjoy the provided activities at your leisure. Camps open around 9 AM and close after the night fire each night. On Sunday, the event wraps up around 4:00 PM.
If there are any activities that you would like to see added please let us know and we will do our best to incorporate them. Also, if you or any members of your unit portray civilians and would like to demonstrate their impression they are more than welcome to do so. There is a place on the registration form to list it.
Enclosed is the Registration Form for both the Reunion and Muster in The Park. Filling out this form does not require you to participate in Muster, it simply gives us a headcount for food, tent layout, and emergency contact information. If you would rather register online, you can do so from our webpage at www.150thpvibucktails.com. This also is a great source to learn about us, for directions, and updates for the Reunion when they are necessary. The Registration deadline is June 1st, 2017.
