Color Bearer Sergeant Samuel Peiffer
Sergeant Samuel Peiffer was killed while waving the 150th flag in the face of the enemy at McPherson's Farm in Gettysburg on July 1, 1863
His orders from Lieutenant-Colonel Huidekoper were to move forward with the colors, which he did without hesitation in the face of galling fire. The line automatically moved with him as he did so. The regimental color guards were all wounded and one of them was killed as the battle raged on. Sergeant Peiffer had remained almost alone as he carried out his orders. As the last commands were received to fall back from the advanced position, Peiffer took a bullet through the head and died where he fell.
He is buried in Peiffer Cemetery in Saegertown, Pennsylvania
